Position Overview

The Research Associate, Cellular Analytis will provide technical support to the Cell and Molecular Biology groups in performing analysis of transgene expression and function in cells derived from transgenic pigs for organ xenotransplantation.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities

  • Culture primary cells for functional assays and protein expression analysis.

  • Isolate primary cell lines aseptically from porcine organs and tissues.

  • Prepare cells for use in functional assays, following established protocols.

  • Maintain, expand and cryopreserve valuable primary cell lines.

  • Stain cells for magnetic bead sorting and flow cytometry.

  • Prepare and submit cell samples for analysis of transgene integration, and for Western blot analysis of transgene protein expression.

  • Assist in assessment of transgenic cell lines via functional cell-based assays.

  • Maintain accurate records of cell isolations and inventory of cryopreserved cell lines.

  • Assist with expansion and single cell cloning of transfected cell lines.

  • Execute experiments following plans and protocols with attention to detail.

  • Summarize data using Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and OneNote.

  • Regularly present and discuss data with other staff and program leaders.

  • Lab maintenance: prepare media and other reagents; order and maintain supply inventory; autoclave instruments and reagents; waste disposal.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Requirements

  • 1-2 years of experience working in a biology, cell biology, or other life-sciences laboratory setting.

  • 1-2 years of hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture and aseptic techniques.

  • 1-2 years of experience culturing, passaging, and cryopreserving mammalian cells.

  • 1-2 years of experience summarizing, analyzing and presenting scientific data.

  • 1-2 years of experience working as a member of a laboratory research team.

  • Knowledge and efficient performance of aseptic cell culture techniques.

  • Ability to culture, passage, and cryopreserve mammalian cell lines.

  • Attention to detail and quality of work.

  • Ability to independently follow experimental methods and protocols and document results.

  • Ability to organize and accomplish multiple laboratory tasks concurrently.

  • Ability to independently initiate routine and day-to-day tasks.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing work schedules and priorities.

  • Willingness to perform occasional weekend work as needed to maintain valuable cell cultures and prepare experiments.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • 1-2 years’ experience working with primary mammalian cell lines.

  • 1-2 years’ experience isolating primary mammalian cells from various tissues.

  • 1 or more years’ experience utilizing magnetic bead separation to purify cell populations.

  • 1 or more years’ experience preparing antibody labelled cells for flow cytometry.

  • 1 or more years’ experience preparing plated cells for cell-based assays.
