The job details are as follows:

What We Do

We build on the strength of our research and development expertise and a distinctive, entrepreneurial culture that encourages diversity, innovation, creativity, sustainability, and, simply, fun. Since inception, our mission has been to find a cure for pulmonary arterial hypertension and other life-threatening diseases. Toward this goal we have successfully gained FDA approval for five medicines, we are always conducting new clinical trials, and we are working to create an unlimited supply of manufactured organs for transplantation.

We are the first publicly-traded biotech or pharmaceutical company to take the form of a public benefit corporation (PBC). Our public benefit purpose is to provide a brighter future for patients through (a) the development of novel pharmaceutical therapies; and (b) technologies that expand the availability of transplantable organs. At the same time, we seek to provide our shareholders with superior financial performance and our communities with earth-sensitive energy utilization.

Our company was founded by an entrepreneur whose daughter was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. She sought to find treatment options and a cure for her daughter and patients like her. We are founder-led, and relentless in our pursuit of “medicines for life”. We continue to research and develop treatments for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, and other orphan diseases.

How you’ll contribute

Conduct bioprocess development to support generation of regenerative medicine products. Optimize cell expansion processes to enable production of tissue-engineered lungs.

  • Independently perform large-scale 3D primary lung cell culture process development experiments to improve yield, purity, and quality of primary lung cells

  • Design and implement complex or insightful experimental procedures to establish & improve bioprocesses, with minimal supervision, and with the goal of creating GMP compatible processes

  • Proficiently perform quality control assays and exploratory bioanalytical assays to phenotypically and functionally characterize cells following expansion, including flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, qPCR, and cellular functional assays

  • Initiate and manage day-to-day tasks effectively and independently, which may include experiment planning, experiment execution, and data analysis. Experimental execution may include cell seeding, cell counting, bioreactor sampling, media exchange, cell harvesting, cell cryopreservation, immunostaining, and cell analytics.

  • Prepare required materials and solutions, including cell culture media, tubing assemblies and bioreactors, for cell culture processes. Clearly and routinely demonstrate foresight and planning for experimental and process needs. May indirectly lead a team in the execution of such tasks.

  • Follow prescribed laboratory methods and protocols effectively and with excellent attention to detail

  • Independently make complex and technical decisions in-process; identify, analyze, and address deviations, process errors, system limitations, or other process issues

  • Independently analyze and interpret technical data; likely author sections of technical reports or summary documents, with minimal oversight

  • Regularly discuss data with manager and other team members; present at lab-wide meetings; adapt presentation material to a wider range of audiences, as needed

  • Coordinate tech transfer activities with internal manufacturing team for expansion and characterization of human lung cells

  • Identify and evaluate new technologies and methods

  • Oversee the proper training of lab personnel. Mentor junior team members in areas related to process development, experimental design, analytics, and data analysis.

  • Track and manage laboratory materials as needed

  • Record all laboratory data in the in-house data management systems in a timely manner

  • All other duties as assigned

  • 5+ years of experience with aseptic technique and mammalian cell culture

  • 4+ years with at least one of the following bioanalytical techniques: flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, qPCR

  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently perform mammalian cell culture with primary cells, inclusive of cell seeding, media exchanges, and harvesting

  • Experience evaluating cell number and viability

  • Facility with appropriate word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and related standard software

  • Experience with laboratory instrumentation and data software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in biology, cell and molecular biology, biomedical sciences, biomedical engineering, biomanufacturing, or a related field
